CIRCE Foundation (Centre of Research for Energy Resources and Consumption) was established in 1993 as an independent Research Centre. In year 2001, CIRCE was recognized as National Centre of Innovation and Technology. CIRCE ´s main activities are related to R&D&i and technical training for postgraduates and professionals in the energy sector, focusing in energy efficiency, sustainability of energy resources, and renewable energy. CIRCE has a staff of over 190 full time people with multidisciplinary profiles including researchers and collaborating professors. Since 1993, CIRCE has conducted more than 1.600 projects proving its self-financing capacity. CIRCE maintains a national leadership position in the field of Energy Efficiency, being the 3rd national research centre getting more projects in competitive calls during period 2004-2007 in Spain.

Relevant network and experience in National and European projects

CIRCE is member of EUREC (European Renewable Energy Centres Agency), EWEA (European Wind Energy Association), EAWE (European Academy of Wind Energy), PTE-EE (Spanish Energy Efficiency Technology Platform), and other platforms and associations related to EE and RE such as: E2BA (European Energy Efficient Association), IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology), ETP ZEP (European Zero emissions Platform).

CIRCE belongs to the Board of Directors and chair of process working group within SPIRE.

CIRCE has already participated in several FP7 projects focused in energy efficiency in process industry such as EDEFU and NIWE

The main technical contribution of CIRCE are the following:

  • Development of a KRI based on a thermoeconomic approach
  • Diagnosis methodology based in the thermoeconomic assessment
  • Modelling and simulation of the processes.

In addition CIRCE will be the leader of the dissemination

Principal team members involved in TOP-REF

Dr. Javier Uche: Senior lecturer at the University of Zaragoza (thermal engineering) and Ph D industrial engineer since 2000. He has developed the optimisation of dual-purpose power and desalination plants (Abu Dhabi). He is currently Director of the Natural Resources Division of CIRCE, and leaders the research line of “water and energy” interaction where he has over 55 articles. Apart from being an advisor to local government and authorities on water issues, other lines of research are: the performance of LCA studies, and the use of energy as a tool to evaluate the environmental cost of water bodies in upon the Water Framework Directive of the EU.

Dr. Antonia Gil: Associate lecturer in Thermal Engineering and Applied Thermodynamics in the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Zaragoza (Spain) since 2008. She manages Thermal Processes Area at CIRCE since 2013. Main research activities are focused on experimental heat transfer, biomass pre-treatment, coal and biomass boilers, gas cleaning of combustion gases and ash deposition related problems. She has also work experience in thermal power plants. She has participated in 6 EU-FP and 7 Spanish R&D projects. Authoress of more than 45 technical papers in conference proceedings and international journals such as Power Technology, Energy, Fuel and Progress in Energy and Combustion Science.
